Northwest Fans Rally for U.S. Volleyball’s 2028 Gold
The Pacific Northwest’s volleyball community has mobilized with remarkable enthusiasm behind the U.S. women’s national team as they prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This vibrant region, encompassing Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, has established itself as an increasingly important contributor to the nationwide quest for Olympic gold through player development, coaching innovation, and passionate fan support.
The region’s volleyball devotion was on full display during the national team’s Northwest tour in February 2025, with capacity crowds in Seattle, Portland, and Spokane turning out for exhibition matches against Brazil and Italy. These enthusiastic receptions underscored the Northwest’s deep appreciation for volleyball excellence and its commitment to supporting Olympic ambitions.
“The Pacific Northwest represents one of American volleyball’s most sophisticated markets,” said Team USA head coach Karch Kiraly during the multi-city tour. “The volleyball IQ throughout this region creates an optimal environment for our preparation and pushes our athletes to maintain elite standards.”
The region’s exceptional collegiate volleyball landscape continues to feed talent directly into the national program, with the University of Washington, Washington State University, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon all contributing players to USA Volleyball’s development systems. Current national team members including Ella May Powell and Samantha Drews refined their skills during decorated careers at Northwest universities, creating direct links between regional volleyball and Olympic aspirations.
“My development in the Northwest shaped my entire approach to the game,” Powell explained during community events in Vancouver, Washington. “The technical emphasis and competitive standard here creates a seamless transition to the national team system, especially in areas like ball control and defensive positioning.”
Youth participation has surged across the Northwest since the announcement of the Los Angeles Olympics, with state athletic associations reporting an average 18% increase in volleyball registration during the 2024-2025 academic year. Club programs throughout the region have similarly experienced record growth, particularly in the Seattle, Portland, and Boise metropolitan areas.
The Columbia Empire Volleyball Association and Evergreen Region Volleyball Association have partnered with USA Volleyball to establish advanced development centers in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, and Boise, implementing standardized training methodologies aligned with the national program. This systematic approach has established the Northwest as a model for volleyball development nationwide.
“What’s happening in the Pacific Northwest exemplifies our vision for volleyball growth in regions with strong sporting traditions,” explained Jamie Davis, CEO of USA Volleyball. “The integration between school programs, clubs, and collegiate teams creates a seamless development pipeline that ultimately strengthens our Olympic medal prospects.”
Economic indicators demonstrate volleyball’s expanding footprint, with specialized training facilities opening across the region and equipment retailers reporting substantial sales increases. The sport’s increased popularity has created coaching opportunities for former players, many of whom incorporate national team methodologies into their developmental approaches.
The region’s connection to the Olympic program extends beyond player development, with several coaching staff members having Northwest ties. Assistant coach Keegan Cook, formerly of the University of Washington, brings regional volleyball philosophy to the national team while maintaining strong connections to Northwest volleyball communities.
“Northwest volleyball has always emphasized technical precision and defensive excellence,” Cook noted. “Those qualities are essential at the international level, which explains why players with Northwest backgrounds transition so effectively to the national team.”
Community engagement has flourished through the “Road to LA” initiative, which brought national team members to volleyball clubs throughout the region for clinics and mentoring sessions. These interactions have strengthened grassroots support while inspiring the next generation of players to pursue volleyball excellence.
Middle blocker Haleigh Washington emphasized the importance of regional support during appearances across the Northwest: “Building toward Olympic gold requires contributions from volleyball communities throughout the country, and the Northwest’s passion for the sport creates momentum that fuels our Olympic journey.”
The national team’s preparation schedule includes returning to multiple Northwest locations in late 2025 for additional training camps and exhibition matches, part of a strategic effort to maintain connections with volleyball strongholds nationwide while providing players with diverse competitive environments.
“The path to Los Angeles runs through volleyball hotbeds like the Pacific Northwest,” said libero Justine Wong-Orantes. “The volleyball infrastructure here is exceptional, and the support we receive from Northwest fans will ultimately contribute to the home-court advantage we’ll need to secure gold in 2028.”
With its established player development resources, coaching expertise, and passionate fan base, the Pacific Northwest has positioned itself as an essential component in America’s pursuit of Olympic volleyball glory at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
