Diddy’s Jail Time May Be Cut Short by Trump

Former President Donald Trump was once again asked about the possibility of him pardoning rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs in a new interview over the weekend. Appearing on Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, August 1, Trump was asked if he would pardon the hip-hop executive after he was convicted last month.

Bad Boy Records founder Sean “Diddy” Combs was recently found guilty of one federal charge: transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. He was also acquitted of several more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. During a trial that lasted over seven weeks, there were plenty of testimonies and scandals. Singer Cassie Ventura took the stand and claimed Combs abused and trafficked her during their previous relationship. The two were involved from 2006 to 2009. Combs has denied all of the allegations, maintaining that he is innocent of the crime.

When asked about the potential pardon, Trump provided a signature mix of evasiveness and allusion to a pardon. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” he replied. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

Trump also brought up his past relationship with Combs, stating that the two were once good friends. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” the former president said. However, he stated that the relationship changed over the years, and that the reason was that he began to pursue politics. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Legal Issues and Old Ties

This is not the first time Trump has been asked or has spoken on the topic of pardoning Combs. In May, he was asked a similar question at the White House press briefing room by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. “I would look at the facts. I haven’t spoken to him in years, but I would certainly look at the facts,” Trump replied at the time. He made it very clear that his decision on whether or not to pardon Combs would not be based on how the two interacted or how much they liked each other.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said, echoing his former relationship with the rapper. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

The charges on which Combs was just recently found guilty are part of a federal investigation. While he was cleared of the most severe charges, the one charge on which he was found guilty still carries with it the possibility of a 20-year sentence in prison sentence. He is currently scheduled to be sentenced on October 3.

The high-profile case has continued to lead to much discussion on the issues of celebrity justice, the powers of a president, and the potential role of personal relationships in clemency decisions. Trump has also brought more fuel to the fire with his public statements on the issue. The former president has continued to show that he’s willing to at least entertain the idea of a pardon for Combs despite the previous troubles in their relationship.

“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said of Combs, “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

Trump shared a full clip of the interview with Finnerty on Friday on X (formerly Twitter). The video has received plenty of feedback from political commentators, hip-hop fans, and legal commentators alike. Whether or not Trump will follow through on a pardon is still up in the air, but the former president has done enough to keep the possibility alive.

Until Combs’ sentencing on October 3, all eyes are on that as a possible point for Trump to issue a pardon.
