Hawkins Is Quarantined in Stranger Things Season 5

Netflix has released a longer-than-usual Stranger Things Season 5 teaser that confirms a ton of what fans have been expecting to see in the fifth and final season, which will premiere later this year. Opening on an image of the Upside Down slowly taking over Hawkins, the trailer shows off some creepy imagery of demodogs on the hunt and action shots of people shooting flamethrowers at the monstrous creatures, but most importantly, it features a glimpse of armed and battle-ready Linda Hamilton joining forces with the main Hawkins gang.

The end of Stranger Things Season 4 left fans with a doozy of a cliffhanger. Vecna, the demonic mastermind behind all of the season’s mayhem, blasted open a gigantic gate, unleashing the Upside Down in full force upon Hawkins. Stranger Things Season 5, according to the teaser trailer, will take place in the fall of 1987. This means that it will serve as a direct sequel to the events of the Season 4 finale, and is also timed to match up with the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, the fateful event that kicked off the entire Stranger Things story back in Season 1.

Stranger Things Season 5 will feature a total of eight episodes. However, each of the season’s episodes will be feature-length, meaning that in total, fans are in for eight Stranger Things movies.

According to the official description for Season 5, the Hawkins characters are going to be dealing with an even worse apocalypse than what they saw in Season 4. The Rifts have been opened, and Hawkins is changed forever. Everyone is on the same mission: Find Vecna and kill him before it’s too late. But no one knows where he is, and with the United States government placing Hawkins under military quarantine and stepping up their search for Eleven, the group is forced to split up. Eleven is on the run, while the rest of the characters are racing against time to figure out how to stop Vecna before it’s too late.

The closer the third anniversary of Will’s disappearance gets, the more the darkness of the Upside Down seeps in, as seen in the trailer. It’s final battle time, and this time the enemy is a whole lot darker and more dangerous than they’ve ever been before. And in this final battle, everyone is needed. It’s time for the whole party to show up, for one last time.

The primary Stranger Things cast will be back for Season 5, and so too will several primary recurring characters from previous seasons. Amybeth McNulty will return to the series as Vicki, while Gabriella Pizzolo will return to play Dustin’s girlfriend Suzie. Jamie Campbell Bower will be back as Vecna.

The cast also features a number of new faces. Linda Hamilton returns to play the character of Dr. Kay, while other notable new additions include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.

Teaser trailers are designed to raise the audience’s pulse, and this one is no exception. Early in the trailer is a shot of Lucas and a bunch of other people huddled on the floor, hiding from demo-dogs. While the lighting is different, the general composition and staging of the shot strongly resemble the famous velociraptor kitchen scene from Jurassic Park, setting the audience’s nerves on edge before the next action beat. For those who prefer a more psychological brand of jumpscare, the trailer’s best moment is undoubtedly Vecna slowly, chillingly uttering the words, “found you.”

The trailer also serves as a gut punch for Eddie Munson fans, as it shows his gravestone with the words “Burn in hell” spray-painted across it. It’s a reminder that no matter what Eddie did to save the group in the Season 4 finale, to much of Hawkins, he remains a villain. Eddie Munson’s death, for all the heroism he displayed in the finale, may be the most heartbreaking character death since Bob Newby’s Season 2 demise. Eddie is, for better and for worse, a character whose death will continue to sting for the other characters and for the audience. The town’s preconceived notions will be upended, but it won’t change the fact that Eddie died a martyr.

The way the season will be divided for release will also be up for discussion. Netflix is going to release the eight episodes in three different parts. This is likely a move designed to annoy fans as much as possible, as many are going to want to binge the finale in one sitting rather than have to wait for episodes to drop every month. Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1 will be released on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will be released a month later on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. The series finale will drop on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.

Netflix’s staggered release will mean that fans’ race to Hawkins’ last stand is going to take the better part of the holidays. Stranger Things is going to be at the center of pop culture discussion for months.

For those who have been with Stranger Things since the beginning, Season 5 is going to mean more than the end of a Netflix series. It’s the end of a chapter in their life that has taken years, several generations of characters, and has been the topic of countless hours of theories, memes, and fan debates. The teaser makes it clear: this is the end of the ride. All of the characters. All of the losses. Every fight that was won. It’s all been building up to this.

It’s anyone’s guess whether every single member of the Stranger Things ensemble will make it to the end, but one thing’s for sure: when the season finally comes to a close on December 31, everyone who matters is going to have given it their all to stop this nightmare — together, one last time.
