Ryan Coogler’s Next Marvel Hit? Ironheart Trailer Drops
Marvel Studios’ Ryan Coogler is having a banner year, or at least the early part of one. The director has already seen the new Sinners perform respectably at the box office, and his next major project has arrived: a limited series for the MCU, Ironheart.
Ironheart just got a new sleek trailer from Marvel Studios, with the June 2025 premiere just a few months away.
Ironheart, or Riri Williams as she is known in the MCU, is a young, teenage engineer and hacker. She is a close protégé of Tony Stark in the comic books and is the first black female superhero in the Marvel universe. Coogler’s upcoming Ironheart series will be the last television-based series to be produced as part of the MCU’s fifth Phase.
The series had been on Marvel’s development horizon for some time, having first been announced in December of 2020 with an expected 2023 premiere. However, as Marvel eventually reworked its multi-year strategy, the company has been shifting the amount of content it releases in a given year to avoid market saturation, and the series was pushed back to this summer. Footage of the show that debuted at the 2024 D23 convention was described as “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center” and suggested the show would have a darker and more realistic tone than other MCU properties.
Ironheart’s debut on screen came in the form of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Riri Williams, a young Black woman studying at MIT, invented a vibranium detector, a device that created conflict with Namor and his blue people when they attacked MIT. She bonds with Shuri, as the two of them share a love of science, and eventually creates an armored suit similar to Iron Man’s, helping to defend Wakanda against Namor and his forces. Before peace is restored, Riri is forced to leave behind the suit with the Wakandans and return to MIT.
A Bond Between Science and Sorcery
Ironheart takes place a few weeks after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The official description of the new series reads: “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
Diverse cast includes Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), Natalie Washington (Lyric Ross), Joe McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich), Cousin John (Manny Montana), Xavier Washington (Matthew Elam), Riri’s mom Ronnie (Anji White), and Slug (Shea Couleé). Additionally, Jim Rash returns to the MCU as the dean of MIT, reprising his role from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and Sacha Baron Cohen will also star, though no details of his character have been shared at this time.
The trailer released on March 7 opens with Riri entering a seemingly closed pizza restaurant. She is chased by a pizza delivery driver through the eatery and ends up in an elevator full of poison gas, with two minutes to escape before she dies. However, this is revealed to be an “interview” created by Parker “The Hood” Robbins (Anthony Ramos). She has two minutes to escape by breaking into a floor-mounted box that houses a gas mask. Riri refuses and instead uses an in-house fire suppression system to escape.
The Hood is impressed and inquires as to her age before he offers her an invitation to get “more up to no good” with him, in some other unspecified venture. Riri, convinced by The Hood that this is a unique chance to make something “iconic”, agrees, before her friend Natalie confronts her. Natalie questions her decision and cautions her that The Hood is “more of a player than a partner”. Afterward, The Hood reiterates his mantra to Riri as to how one has to do “questionable things” to do something truly “iconic”.
Ironheart will release its first three episodes on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the final three releasing on weekly installments thereafter. No second season has been announced, though it is possible should the series be successful. Marvel has shared the trailer as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette to further entice fans ahead of the June premiere.
With Ryan Coogler’s penchant for blending larger-than-life spectacle with superheroism in a grounded, “street-level” fashion, and the potential in Dominique Thorne’s fresh take on Ironheart, this six-part series may be the next in a long line of impressive Marvel properties.
